National History
In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became America's first Greek-letter organization established by college women of African descent. Her roots date back to Howard University, Washington, D.C., where the idea for formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri.
In a world in which materialism is pervasive, and technology and competition have decreased the need for collaboration and cooperation, it is critical to have an association that cuts across racial, international, physical, and social barriers to help individuals and communities develop and maintain constructive relationships with others. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is that vital organization that our founder, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, envisioned.
Alpha Kappa Alpha is a sisterhood composed of women who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of self-fulfillment through volunteer service. Alpha Kappa Alpha serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 170,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.

Chapter History
Founded on April 15, 1946, the Delta Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., is a volunteer professional service organization comprised of nearly 100 women of African descent who use the special skills and expertise developed in their working life to design and implement a program of service that addresses a broad spectrum of issues and concerns within five program areas.
Our programs address the needs of the Greater Phoenix community through five program targets: Education; Health; the Black Family; Economics; and the Arts.
Members of the Delta Beta Omega Chapter and AKA chapters throughout our sisterhood focus their efforts on these program areas and develop projects that meet the specific needs of their communities.
Focus areas are decided upon every four years, when members representing chapters from across the United States and abroad meet at the Alpha Kappa Alpha international convention.

Delta Beta Omega History
On June 8, 1931, Alpha Sigma, a mixed chapter of graduate and undergraduate sorors was
organized in Phoenix, Arizona. This was the first Black Greek organization in the state. Late in 1943,
the graduate sorors of the mixed chapter applied to establish a graduate chapter. The Delta Beta
Omega Chapter was founded on April 15, 1946 and on April 21, 1946, the graduate chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered. Veora Johnson was the first president of the chapter. Delta Beta Omega has evolved as a chapter endeavoring to meet the needs of an ever-changing society, however the focus on scholarship, health, and the advancement of human and civil rights has stayed the same. The chapter’s moral and civic contributions continue even to the present. The members strive for a better tomorrow by giving of ourselves through timeless service.
